Last year over 13,000 Battlefielders stepped up to help push video game science forward as part of the PsyOps research campaign. Each gamer filled out a personality test and offered his Battlefield 3 statistics. Now all the answers are in, and they might just surprise you.

It turns out that how you play Battlefield 3 does say a bit about who you are. Slower players are more careful and precise in real life. People who tend to shrug off their real-life duties tend to be better players. And, of all the statistics that are tracked for Battlefield 3, your Unlock Score says the most about your personality. The more and the faster you unlock new gear in the game, the less careful, precise, and out-going you are in real life.

Now keep in mind that these effects are all averages over big groups, and the effects are small. Other games might show bigger effects, or maybe other game statistics need to be examined (‘Bunny Hops per Minute’ anyone?). As it is, we know that play style and personality are linked. You do show a little of yourself in how you play a game. Yet there is an additional surprise: we are all showing our age on the Battlefield. Not a little, but a lot. The relationship between age and play style is quite strong. It turns out older players kill less and die less, aim worse, and score less. Yet, older gamers do not lose more often … even their objective score is similar to that of younger gamers. Basically, younger players are better at Battlefield 3, but older players know the true meaning of PTFO.
